An 18-year-old accused of shooting and injuring a Carrs-Safeway employee following a scuffle inside the Aurora Village location early Saturday morning was indicted Thursday on additional charges.
An Anchorage grand jury indicted Devon Brown on 16 charges, including: attempted murder, first-and second-degree assault, weapons misconduct, criminal mischief as well as 12 counts of third-degree assault for threatening the lives of others at the scene.
The additional charges were brought after prosecutors and police officers watched surveillance video and spoke to victims at the scene.
“Over the last several days the police department, in connection with the Carrs employees and management, as well as other citizens have provided surveillance video and other information about what happened,” Anchorage District Attorney Clint Campion said in an interview Friday. “That allowed us to expand the number of people we believe were placed in fear for their lives on Saturday morning.”
Brown was first arrested and charged with misconduct involving a weapon, assault and reckless endangerment after a police detective recognized him in surveillance video.
A release sent out by the Anchorage Police Department said a group of “unruly teens” had been fighting inside the store and breaking merchandise, and one had even urinated in the aisles.
The events occurred around 6:45 a.m. Saturday at the Carrs-Safeway store located at Northern Lights Blvd and Minnesota Dr.
Cell phone footage sent to KTVA shows the group of teens arguing with an employee as they are escorted out the front door. One teen can be seen in the video smashing a window inside the store’s entryway as an employee tries to hold the door closed.
The group then leaves and walks to their vehicles. At that point, multiple gunshots can be heard in the video and someone inside the store yells, “gun! gun!”
The group then gets into multiple vehicles and drives away.
According to the indictment released Friday, the employee was shot twice as Brown fired at the store.
“From our perspective, we believe that he acted with the intent to kill another person,” said Campion.
Brown is also charged with second-degree assault for punching another man in the face during the altercation, breaking his orbital socket. The investigation is ongoing and none of the other teens involved have been charged.
“I have reason to believe there are other witnesses that were present that may have seen some of what occurred on Saturday morning, and I would encourage them to call the police department,” said Campion.
Brown will be arraigned on the new charges Monday in Anchorage Superior Court. He faces a possible sentence of 99 years in prison for the attempted murder charge.
