Alaska State Troopers say they’ve flown to Kaltag four times in an attempt to arrest a 40-year-old man accused of assaulting and kidnapping his girlfriend in April.
Over the weekend, troopers issued an online dispatch, stating that they’d received a report of a disturbance, on April 11, in the Yukon River village — home to about 172 people. The agency initially provided limited information, only saying that Arlo Olson was charged with two counts of second-degree assault, third-degree assault, two counts of fourth-degree assault, fifth-degree criminal mischief, and kidnapping.
On Monday, trooper spokesperson Megan Peters said that during the incident Olson strangled his girlfriend and wouldn’t allow her to leave. At one point, she was able to run from the house. Peters said that Olson chased her down and made her go back inside. Eventually, she was able to get help from her family and call state law enforcement.
Peters said that in four separate trips, a trooper traveled to Kaltag, but each time Olson evaded them. She explained it took more than a month to put the information into a dispatch because the trooper was “waiting to do the dispatch until after he got the man into custody.”
But because the trooper has yet to successfully locate Olson, he publicly published the information.
Troopers also reported that Olson was wanted in an April 7 incident for chopping down the door at his girlfriend’s house. He was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, but never taken into custody.
