The Anchorage Police Department has arrested a man accused of killing his girlfriend at the couple’s Lake Otis Road apartment last month.
According to APD, on April 19 Victor Sibson, 21, shot and killed 22-year-old Brittanymae Haag.
“At approximately 2:22 a.m. on April 19, 2017, the Anchorage Police Department
responded to a 911 call from a male who reported that he shot himself,” a release from APD states.
When officers arrived, they found Haag lying on the floor, alive. She was transported to a local hospital and died shortly after.
Sibson was also taken to the hospital with critical injuries, including entry and exit wounds on his skull, according to Assistant District Attorney James Fayette.
“Police found one slug with one expended shell casing,” said Fayette. “So, what that told us is, when you line the two participants up, that in all probability Ms. Haag died reaching around Mr. Sibson’s head trying to keep him from suiciding.”
Police monitored his condition and questioned him before Sibson was ultimately released from the hospital.
Then, almost a month later, on May 16, Sibson was indicted by an Anchorage grand jury for causing Haag’s death. He was charged with second-degree murder, a felony offense, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
Charging documents state he “knowingly engaged in conduct that resulted in the death of another person under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life.”
Police have been searching for him since Tuesday. He turned himself in at APD headquarters shortly before noon Friday.
If convicted, Sibson could face up to 99 years in prison. Bail has been set at $250,000.
Sibson will appear in Anchorage jail court Saturday afternoon.
Correction: An earlier version of this story stated Sibson was charged with first- and second-degree murder. He faces a single charge of second-degree murder.
