Anchorage police are on the search for a killer after a fatal stabbing Thursday morning. It happened just before eight near Brother Francis Shelter and Bean’s Cafe. Police have made no arrests and do not have suspects in custody.
Police have made no arrests and do not have suspects in custody.
The crime scene tape put up at Third Avenue and Karluk Street marks Anchorage’s 16th homicide this year.
“At this time we are investigating what happened — what lead to it” APD Sgt. Slav Markiewicz said. “We have a number of people at the police station that we are going to interview and we also have the crime scene team here too.”
Police say a man was stabbed on the sidewalk. He then walked to Bean’s Cafe for help, where staff started first aid and called 911.
The man was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police have not yet identified the victim, but, Bean’s Café Executive Director Lisa Sauder says he was one of their regulars.
“It is always chaotic when something like that happens and it’s very hard on the staff,” Sauder said. “These are often times people that we see every day, that we develop relationships with, friendships with, and that we care about.”
The area outside Bean’s Cafe was crowded with people wondering what went wrong.
Many say violence near the popular homeless hangout is common, but, murder is not.
Ed Pratt and Christopher Kadake showed KTVA where they had both been stabbed while living on the streets. They’re grateful to still have their lives and hope police catch whoever is responsible for taking one.
“He had a life and he was young, or old, or whatever, but, he still had a life,” Kadake said.
APD is searching for the suspect who they described as a black or Hispanic male with curly hair, clean shaven, 5-foot-9 and about 30-years-old. He’s said to be wearing a black hoodie and gray jeans.
