An Anchorage man has been convicted of raping a woman near Campbell Creek back in 2015.
A jury found 31-year-old Michael Westlake guilty of sexual assault in the first degree, assault in the second degree, theft in the second degree and assault in the fourth degree.
According to information presented in court, Westlake approached a woman near the Alaska Native Medical Center and asked her if she’d like to join him for a walk.
The pair began walking towards Campbell Creek when Westlake tried to kiss the woman. When she refused, Westlake began repeatedly punching her, breaking her glasses. When she tried to scream, authorities say Westlake grabbed her by the neck and sexually assaulted her.
According to court documents, when Westlake heard a noise, he ceased the assault, stole the woman’s purse and fled.
The victim found a passerby and reported she’d been assaulted. The passerby called 911 and waited with the victim until authorities arrived.
Responding officers located Westlake nearby, who they say had blood on his hands from the attack.
Westlake has a long rap sheet, including prior convictions for sexual abuse of a minor, multiple assault charges and failure to register as a sex offender.
Because of Westlake’s prior convictions, prosecutors intend to ask for an aggravated sentence. Prosecutors believe the court could sentence Westlake to serve up to 99 years in prison.
