ANCHORAGE – A jury convicted a man of assault Thursday after he kicked a U.S. Coast Guard member in the face last year.
Ketchikan resident Jon William Munhoven, 56, assaulted the federal officer in September 2013, the U.S. district attorney’s office said in a written statement Thursday afternoon.
According to the statement, Coast Guard personnel at the Ketchikan station responded to a call for help from a mariner who said he had been assaulted on his vessel, prosecutors said. The mariner had a bloody nose and said Munhoven hit him.
Munhoven was “irate and hostile” when Coast Guard first contacted him and told him to get off the vessel, prosecutors said. Once placed in handcuffs, he refused to listen to directions and and began to “actively resist” Coast Guard personnel. When Coast Guard officers tried to move him to the back deck “for his own safety and the safety of the crew,” they said he purposefully kicked a Coast Guard boarding team member in the face with a shod foot.
Munhoven’s sentencing is scheduled for June 23 in Juneau, prosecutors said, and he could face up to to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
