ANCHORAGE – A 22-year-old Anchorage man faces more than two dozen felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a months-long string of vehicle break-ins, thefts and forgeries.

According to a statement from the Anchorage Police Department, Kyle Spernak was charged Friday with 23 felonies and five misdemeanors. Police said a lengthy investigation by APD Detective Darren Hernandez tied Spernak to more than half a dozen cases dating back to July 2, when a victim reported a stolen check had been forged in the amount of $470. The latest forgery was reported Sept. 26, police said.

In nearly every case, police said Spernak allegedly stole only two or three checks from victims’ checkbooks, making them out to himself before cashing or depositing them. None of the victims were acquainted with Spernak, police said.

Spernak was arrested Oct. 24 for vehicle theft.
