A K-9 named Blazer is credited with apprehending a suspect involved in a fight with an Alaska State Trooper in Wasilla Monday night.
According to trooper dispatch, AST received a report of a fight — possibly involving a gun – between two men on Pioneer Peak Drive just before 7 p.m. A responding trooper found no fight in progress; just a man who appeared to have been involved in a recent fight.
When the trooper made contact with the man, according to dispatch, the man began to fight and reach for the waistband of his pants. The struggle continued, and both the man and the trooper fell from the porch into the driveway. The trooper, a K-9 handler, warned the fighting man to stop or risk being bitten, but the warning went unheeded.
AST said the responding trooper then released Blazer from the patrol car with a remote controller, and the dog “immediately responded and apprehended the subject.”
Another trooper arrived on scene shortly thereafter, and AST said the two law enforcement officers were able to take the man into custody without further incident. The trooper involved in the initial fight was treated for minor injuries at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, AST said, and the suspect remains hospitalized for injuries sustained when apprehended by the trooper K-9.
The suspect’s name is being withheld until charges are filed against him, troopers said.
