An investigation is underway into the stabbing of a 3-year-old in East Anchorage, police said Tuesday.
Police received a call at 1:19 p.m. about a child who had been stabbed by a woman on the 200 block of Muldoon Road, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro in a statement. They were staying at a Safe Harbor Inn, which provides shelter to dozens of individuals and families in need of transitional housing.
Police and medics responded, Castro said, and the child was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The 3-year-old is undergoing emergency surgery, police said Tuesday afternoon.
A woman was taken into custody and police said they are investigating the incident.
In a written statement, Tom Newins, board chair with Safe Harbor Inn, said the nonprofit’s board of directors and employees are cooperating with police and are concerned for the safety of the child. No additional details were offered.
KTVA talked with a few residents who say the building is normally quiet and that they were shocked by the incident.
