An Anchorage doctor is accused of billing Medicaid hundreds of thousands of dollars for services he didn’t provide.

Dr. Shubhranjan Ghosh, 39, of Anchorage was arrested Tuesday. He is the founder of Ghosh Psychiatric Services, which specializes in mental health stabilization of Alaskan youth, the website says.

Charging documents say Ghosh attempted to siphon more than $340,000 from Medicaid. The doctor claims he was treating patients, but prosecutors say he was falsifying records to cover his tracks.

The 39-year-old was in court Wednesday. Ghosh is charged with medical assistance fraud, scheming to defraud and tampering with evidence.

Ghosn falsified records and billed Medicaid from 2010 to 2013. He claimed he was treating patients at the date and time of the billings, according to charging documents.

An alert office employee found that wasn’t the case — while going over billing records she noticed irregularities and notified authorities.

“This is a great example of what happens when a citizen comes forward and brings something to the attention of state or federal authorities that something appears to be wrong,” said Andrew Peterson with the state Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

Bail for Ghosh has been set at $100,000.

We reached out to his lawyer for comment but he wasn’t available.
