An intoxicated Kivalina resident brandishing a shotgun was apprehended by a village police officer and a local resident Wednesday afternoon, Alaska State Troopers said.
Just before 2 p.m., troopers in Kotzebue said they received a report that 25-year-old Quunguq Hawley had assaulted 24-year-old Rosswell Stalker with a knife. Troopers began the trip from Kotzebue to Kivalina, but while they were en route, they said Hawley began brandishing a shotgun and firing it into the air around his residence, challenging any comers to fight.
That’s when troopers said VPO Henry Swan and Kivalina resident Jerome Onalik were able to sneak up behind Hawley, tackle him into the snow, disarm him and place him in custody.
According to trooper dispatch, Hawley was taken to the Kotzebue Regional Jail pending arraignment.
