The FBI has released a report that shows a nationwide decrease in certain crimes, authorities said.
Results for Anchorage, however, are mixed.
Law enforcement agencies across the country reported a 5.4 percent dip in violent crimes from January to June 2013 when compared with the first six months of 2012, the FBI said in a statement. Violent crime consists of murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
Property crimes from January to June 2013 also decreased by 5.4 percent compared to the same time period of 2012, the FBI said. Burglary, larceny/theft, arson and motor vehicle theft are all property crimes. However, arson is not included in property crime totals. Separately, arson reports dropped by 15.6 percent in 2013 when compared to 2012.
In Anchorage, violent crime, murder, aggravated assault and arson report rates dropped. Meanwhile, report rates for rape, robbery, property crime, burglary, larceny/theft and motor vehicle theft all increased. The biggest spike was in rape reports, which jumped 37.24 percent.
In 2013, however, rape was reported in Anchorage using the new definition of rape “and is not comparable to previous years’ historical forcible rape data,” the FBI said in a footnote. The term “forcible” has been removed and the definition has become broader, authorities say.
