Troopers say a 65-year-old Wasilla resident shot at intruders early Tuesday morning, scaring the would-be burglars away.
No one was injured, but the senior citizen, who wants to remain anonymous, was shaken by the ordeal.
“I heard something fall in the kitchen, a large quantity of things fall, and I thought the cats had done it,” said the victim. ”I thought maybe I could go back to sleep, but something told me do not do that, and that’s when I reached for the gun.”
Troopers responded to a 911 call from the victim around 3 a.m. and can’t confirm whether it was one intruder or multiple.
“They kicked in the door, they busted the frame. The door was still locked after it was kicked in,” said the victim.
The longtime Alaskan resident was asleep in her chair, just a few feet from the kitchen, when she heard the crash, followed by whispers.
While seated, she fired a shot from underneath her comforter.
The bullet went through the entertainment center and into a videotape.
“And I came out here in the kitchen with the gun pointed out in front of me obviously,” she said. ”I was shaking by that point, probably because of the adrenaline.”
Troopers say the attempted thieves also tried to steal an ATV.
Now, the senior citizen is angry.
“I got really mad because I was violated. My property was violated and I thought of the things that could have happened to me if I had not had that gun,” she said.
The intruder or intruders fled in the car they came in, troopers said. The investigation is ongoing.
