A 32-year-old woman has been convicted of swindling more than $12,000 in food stamp benefits.
Jazmine Wheaton was convicted and sentenced Wednesday to 18 months incarceration with 15 months suspended after she failed to disclose income for herself and husband from April 2008 and September 2009, according to a statement from the Alaska Department of Law.
The unreported income disqualified the pair from receiving food stamp benefits, the Department of Law said. In total, Wheaton raked in $12,377 in benefits.
Palmer Superior Court Judge Eric Smith also ordered Wheaton to serve three months in jail and placed her on felony probation for five years. Wheaton must also pay back the state for the benefits and perform 100 hours of community service within the next 12 months. She can’t participate in the food stamp program for 24 months.
