Authorities are investigating a 19-year-old Chevak woman’s death as a homicide.
A village public safety officer contacted Alaska State Troopers around 11 a.m. Wednesday that a deceased woman had been found near Chevak Clinic, according to an online dispatch. Thursday, troopers identified her as Roxanne Smart of Chevak. Her next-of-kin have been notified.
The VPSO secured the scene whiled Bethel-based troopers responded. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation also responded to help determine the cause and circumstances of the death. The State Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy, said AST spokeswoman Megan Peters.
Located in Western Alaska, fewer than 1,000 people are estimated to live in Chevak, according to state data.
