Alaska State Troopers are at the end of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.
Designed to discourage impaired drivers from getting behind the wheel, the national campaign began Aug. 13 and ended Tuesday, Sept. 3.
In those three weeks, troopers dished out 66 misdemeanor DUI arrests and eight felony DUI arrests. Eighty-three drivers were charged with driving with a suspended or revoked license and an additional 735 drivers were contacted after being pinned as REDDI reports — but were determined to not be driving under the influence, according to a statement from the Department of Public Safety.
Troopers cited more than 1,300 people for speeding and another 340 for not wearing their seat belts. There were more than 100 crashes that caused damage and 23 that resulted in injuries, according to the Department of Public Safety.
AST is also investigating the fatal crash on Parks Highway that killed two people.
Although the sober driving campaign has ended, authorities will still actively look for impaired and dangerous drivers, AST said in a release.
