Alaska State Troopers are looking for a 37-year-old inmate who ran away from authorities as she was being transported from a halfway house to a correctional center in Fairbanks Wednesday afternoon.

Laura M. Mulcahy of Fairbanks was being moved from the Northstar Center to Fairbanks Correctional Center for a medical appointment when she opened the door of the Northstar van she was riding, hopped out and ran, according to Sherrie Daigle with the state Department of Corrections and troopers. She was not handcuffed, which is not unusual, Daigle said. She escaped at the intersection of Airport Way and Cowles Street and troopers received the report of her escapee around 2:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Mulcahy was arrested on Oct. 29, 2013, on an outstanding theft warrant, said AST spokeswoman Megan Peters. She could face a second-degree escape charge. Troopers ask anyone with information on her whereabouts to call them at 451-5100.

Last week, a 24-year-old inmate escaped from Northstar Center. He is back in custody, Peters said.
