A Florida man who fled to Alaska over 20 years ago and used his deceased stepbrother’s identity has changed his plea.
Joseph Keenan May pleaded guilty to charges of identity theft in federal court on Friday.
Prosecutors say the 60-year-old has been wanted since 1991 for sexual battery in Florida. A warrant was issued in 1993 for unlawful flight.
He had been living under the name Michael Camp and used his stepbrother’s social security number to apply for an Alaska driver’s license and unemployment benefits, says the district attorney’s office.
The FBI arrested May in Eagle River in June. He faces up to 12 years in prison and could potentially face the death penalty in Florida, according to the district attorney’s office.
May will be sentenced in November.
