A man is in custody after a 10-hour standoff with police in Fairbanks.
The Fairbanks Police Department arrested 38-year old Michael William Bracht after a vehicle chase and a standoff at the Justa-Store on Chena Pump Road.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported that the incident began at about 2 a.m. in the parking lot of the Safeway store on University Avenue. The vehicle pursuit began when officers attempted to arrest the man on a warrant for escaping from the North Star Center, say police.
Police followed the man to a Justa-Store, where they say he took out a gun and threatened to kill himself. The News-Miner reported that a female passenger fled from the red SUV-type vehicle but Bracht stayed inside.
As the standoff went on, authorities were forced to close multiple roads and put several schools on secure mode, police say.
Police finally used a ram device to smash the windows of Bracht’s vehicle and take him into custody.
