ANCHORAGE — An attempted break in at a Midtown diner led to a vehicle chase and a search that closed down multiple streets Monday morning, after the suspects rammed a police vehicle.
The Anchorage Police Department has released details of the incident that led to road closures Monday as they searched for suspects in the area between A Street and C Street.
Around 12:30 a.m. Monday APD received a report of multiple people breaking into Kriner’s Diner at 2409 C St., according to a release from police. When officers arrived, a white SUV rammed a patrol vehicle and fled the area and two men ran from behind the building. Police said it doesn’t appear the suspects entered the diner before APD arrived.
Some officers chased the SUV when the driver fled, headed the wrong way down C Street, but due to danger to officers and other motorists the chase was called off. Not long after, the SUV stopped on A Street near Fireweed Lane. Two women who were inside of the SUV were arrested and taken or further questioning.
The vehicle had been stolen and seized by police.
Meanwhile, other officers initiated a search for the two men that fled on foot. During the search, two officers were walking up an embankment near West 22nd Avenue and C Street when multiple shots were fired at them. The officers were able to take cover and avoid getting hit by the bullets.
APD spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said in an email Monday that police have not been able to determine where the shots came from and who fired them.
APD’s SWAT Team was called out after 4:30 a.m. to help in the search for the two suspects and investigate the shooting. Streets were closed as officers searched the area.
The search was called off just before 7:30 a.m. and all streets have been reopened. The suspects were not located.
No officers were injured in the incident.
A release from APD later Monday morning described the men – one is possibly bald, the other had dark hair. One man was wearing a gray jacket and the other wore a blue sweatshirt.
Anyone with information on the suspects involved or their possible whereabouts, is asked to contact APD at 786-8900 and press zero to speak with a dispatcher. To provide an anonymous crime tip, contact Anchorage Crime Stoppers online at www.anchoragecrimestoppers.com or call 561-STOP.
