Paul Miller has a long history of violence. Most of his 13 convictions involve assault. Now, he’s been charged with something more serious.
The 51-year-old is the person the Anchorage Police Department believe shot and killed caregiver Eduardo Escalante, 63, Tuesday night at the assisted-living home they shared on East 24th Avenue. Escalante’s wife and two other clients live there as well. According to police, Miller is the one who called authorities following the shooting.
“We’re still working on the motive,” says Sgt. Michael Coutorier. “Mr. Miller did come to the Anchorage Police Department, he was interviewed, referenced this incident, but at this point, we do not know exactly what his motive was.”
Police are also trying to find out where Miller got the gun, since guns are not allowed in the home.
“Right now the focus of our investigation is where that gun came from,” Coutorier said. “That’s where most of our effort is today, trying to determine that.”
It looks like other clients in the home have moved, but KTVA has not been told where.
Miller made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon.
He remains held on $500,000 bail and will be released if it is to an approved third-party custodian.
Miller must also stay away from the house and is not allowed to have any guns. He could spend the rest of his life in prison if he’s convicted.
